Asarum europaeum – 2026

Asarum europaeum, commonly known as European wild ginger, is an evergreen perennial valued for its low-growing, glossy, heart-shaped foliage and subtle, cup-shaped brownish-purple flowers that bloom in spring. This groundcover plant forms dense mats, making it ideal for shaded woodland gardens, under trees, or in areas with damp, humus-rich soil. The dark green leaves provide year-round interest and create a lush carpet that suppresses weeds, while the hidden flowers add a delicate touch of intrigue for those who look closely. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils and tolerates deep shade. Asarum europaeum is also deer-resistant, making it suitable for gardens where browsing is a concern, and its foliage pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.
