Oxalis versicolor 8211 2026

Oxalis versicolor is a tender perennial grown for its delightful and unusual flowers. Its narrow, grassy green leaves form low clumps, above which appear clusters of tightly furled buds. As they unfurl in bright light, the trumpet-shaped blooms reveal striking white petals edged with vivid red, giving them a distinctive candy-cane appearance. This charming effect makes it a popular choice for containers, rock gardens, and glasshouses where its ornamental qualities can be appreciated up close.

Best suited to well-drained sandy or loamy soil, Oxalis versicolor thrives in full sun and requires protection from frost in the UK. It can be overwintered indoors or under cover in colder regions. With modest care, including keeping the soil from becoming waterlogged, it will reward gardeners with a long season of eye-catching blooms. Its compact habit and showy flowers make it an ideal choice for adding colour and novelty to small garden spaces.
