Philadelphus ‘Virginal’

This plant offers both hardiness and beauty. During the flowering season of late-spring to mid-summer, the blooms are amazing. They arrive in bunches on panicles or racemes. Their fragrant beauty attracts a number of pollinators and for this has received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The wonderfully crisp and white blooms contrast with its deep green and wide-bladed leaves.

The leaves will turn into beautiful yellows and golds in later autumn. And as it is a deciduous shrub, it will eventually lose its leaves in preparation for winter. It is also hardy and will easily survive winter. It should be mulched in the spring with a rich mix of organic material.

Aphids can present as a pest problem. And it can also be affected by a powdery mildew.

As it is a taller shrub, it works well towards the back of a perennial garden area, especially in urban settings, where air quality is a concern. During the blooming season, it will perfume the air with its rich and wonderful aroma.
