Physostegia virginiana – 2026

Physostegia virginiana, commonly known as Obedient Plant, is a clump-forming perennial that adds vertical interest to gardens. It features upright stems adorned with lance-shaped, sharply-toothed leaves. From mid to late summer, it produces dense spikes of tubular, pink to lavender flowers that bloom from the bottom to the top of each spike, attracting pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

This cultivar thrives in moist but well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is suitable for various garden settings, including borders, cottage gardens, and rain gardens. While it can spread aggressively through rhizomes, regular maintenance such as dividing congested colonies in spring can help manage its growth. It is also known for its resistance to common garden pests and diseases, ensuring a healthy and vibrant plant throughout its growing season.
