Tricyrtis formosana – 2026

Tricyrtis formosana, commonly known as the Formosan toad lily, is a shade-loving perennial that adds delicate elegance to woodland borders and shaded garden areas. Characterised by its upright, arching stems and lance-shaped, dark green leaves, this cultivar forms dense clumps that provide structure and texture throughout the growing season. From late summer through to early autumn, it produces clusters of star-shaped flowers with white petals and subtle purple spots, creating a striking display that attracts pollinators and adds visual interest to mixed beds or containers.

Ecologically, Tricyrtis formosana is highly attractive to pollinators, particularly bees, which are drawn to its nectar-rich flowers. It thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and prefers a light condition ranging from partial to full shade. Minimal maintenance beyond occasional deadheading ensures a prolonged flowering period. Its upright habit, delicate blooms, and tolerance of shaded conditions make it an excellent choice for enhancing both the aesthetic and ecological value of UK gardens.
