If youre looking to add a splash of architectural geometry to your garden, the Variegated String of Buttons (Crassula perforata) is your go-to succulent. This hardy beauty features stacked, triangular leaves that look like theyve been precision-engineered, sporting a creamy yellow variegation that blushes rose-pink when kissed by the sun. Reaching a tidy 6 to 12 inches in height, its the ideal size for rock gardens or as a “spiller” in patio containers. It thrives inbright, filtered sunlight, though it appreciates a little afternoon shade during our hottest summer days to keep those colors vibrant. Perhaps the best part for us mountain gardeners is its animal-resistant nature; the thick, waxy leaves are rarely on the menu for wandering deer or rabbits. Its a tough, drought-tolerant neighbor that brings sophisticated color to your yard with almost zero effort.
