Verbascum ‘Gainsborough’ – 2026

Verbascum ‘Gainsborough’ is a semi-evergreen, short-lived perennial that produces erect spikes of primrose-yellow flowers, each 23 cm wide, above a basal rosette of grey-green, ovate leaves. These flowers are centered by delicate orange stamens and are borne on numerous branched candelabra-style spires, creating a striking vertical accent in the garden. This cultivar is well-suited for beds, borders, and wildlife gardens, adding both ornamental and ecological value.

Ecologically, ‘Gainsborough’ attracts pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, due to its abundant, nectar-rich flowers. It thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun, tolerating a range of soil types, including alkaline conditions. The plant is hardy in UK gardens and is drought-tolerant once established. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage further blooms and prevent undesired self-seeding. Its bright, bold colour makes it a standout for both ornamental and ecological value.
