Waldsteinia ternata 8211 2026

Waldsteinia ternata is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial prized for its glossy, trifoliate foliage and bright spring flowers. It forms a dense carpet of dark green, strawberry-like leaves that remain attractive year-round, providing excellent ground cover. From spring to early summer, short stems rise above the foliage to carry clusters of golden-yellow, cup-shaped flowers, creating a cheerful display in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or under shrubs. Its compact, spreading habit makes it ideal for covering banks, pathways, or areas where a low-maintenance, flowering groundcover is desired.

This species thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to a variety of conditions once established. It is low-maintenance, requiring only occasional division to maintain vigour and control spread. Waldsteinia ternata is valuable to early-season pollinators such as bees, while its dense foliage suppresses weeds, combining ornamental appeal with ecological benefit.
